I began reading the Lord of the Rings to my daughter, Serrie, as a bed-time reading. We recently finished reading the Chronicles of Narnia, which took several years (I kept on falling asleep!=)), and now we are onto something new.
One of my favorite scenes from the Lord of the Rings is one of the last scenes in the last movie when Aragorn, the returned king, leads his small troop against a mountain-full of orcs, which would lead to his certain death. He is not standing behind his troops and ordering them to charge against the enemy. No. He is in the very front, leading the charge!
It is a beautiful scene that makes every young man’s heart beat with loyal blood! It makes us think, “Even if I go to my death, I will follow such a leader who will give his own life for the cause. It is an honorable death!” We admire men like that. They are worth giving our lives to.
Jesus was that King. He led the charge, going to His certain death. And those of us following behind Him will go to our death gladly and honorably because there is something greater than simply keep living.
You are the most handsome of the sons of men;grace is poured upon your lips;therefore God has blessed you forever.Gird your sword on your thigh, O mighty one,in your splendor and majesty!Ps 45:2-3
This was sung by a man! There is nothing sexual about this. But there is plenty of admiration and honor-giving. I believe this is speaking of Jesus, the King, who would come back as a Warrior to conquer the world once and for all.
Is Jesus beautiful to you?Is Jesus admirable to you?Do you want to follow Him? Do you want to die for Him?
Let His blood and Spirit course through you this weekend.
