Who you are under is infinitely more important than who are under you.

When I was little, my mom told me to be the “head” and not the “tail.” What she meant was for me to work hard and move up the ladder to be a leader and not be a bottom-feeder. Although spoken with good intent, if taken wrongly (which is 99% of the time), it can be unbiblical.

We are not measured by how many people are under us (that serve us). But WHO is over (above) us. And there better not be many who are over us. There should only be One – God.

When Satan is tempting Jesus in the wilderness at the onset of his ministry, he tempts Him to worship him and he will give Jesus the kingdoms of the world (Luke 4:6). Only one stipulation – He must worship Satan.

Here was Satan’s proposal: Have me over you and I will put everything under You!

Jesus says “no” to this. He says in essence, He will have only one Person over Him and that is God even if He would have no one under Him….

What Satan proposed is what countless leaders have bought into. In striving to have everyone under them, they put Satan over them. Did they know that’s what they were doing? Serving Satan? Of course not. But Satan doesn’t care. As long as they are serving God, they are serving him.

When we decide to serve God, we must forgo of the desire to have people under us (to serve us). The very desire to be served is ungodly and is not from God. As Jesus said, “The son of man did not come to be served but to serve.”  (Matt. 20:28)

Who do you serve? Who do you fear? Who pays your bill? It ought to be God alone! (And people only subsequently…)
