Esther 6:3-4And the king said, “What honor or distinction has been bestowed on Mordecai for this?” The king’s young men who attended him said, “Nothing has been done for him.”
Although “doing good” is something society at large should do, the struggle to do good for “goodness sake” doesn’t seem to be strong enough.  Many times the coldness of ungrateful people hardens our hearts, and the struggle to do what you should do, can become a mentality that doesn’t seem worth it…
Even as Christians, the ethic to do good for “Christ sake” doesn’t alleviate people’s ingratitude and overall lack of appreciation, in many cases the lack of gratitude is worse!  Yet the power to be motivated to do “good” from God is everlasting, if we seek Him for it (Psalm 1:3, Proverbs 11:25, John 4:14).  In a world where gratitude is rare, being consistent in “good works”  increases your chances of being taken for granted and forgotten…(think us and Jesus)
If you are familiar with the book of Esther, you will remember her uncle Mordecai was a great motivator for her as Queen.  He was first to lead in his conviction of doing good for “Christ sake”, by reporting two eunuchs who wanted to harm the King.  Yet this heroic act of Mordecai went unnoticed, even though it saved the King…(Esther 2:19-23)
Mordecai like us, probably thought about how fruitless doing good, and serving people sacrificially seems to be.  The Jews were under a great threat to be destroyed by an edict the king had signed!  Mordecai had to think to God, “I’ve sacrificially saved the life of a King who has already signed an edict to destroy us, what good has walking in unconditional love really done?”
As the story goes, God would keep the King from sleep, and have him look over the records and realize that Mordecai the Jew, has saved his life!  So the King would honor him in royal splendor through one of his fiercest enemies, Haman.  The thing we can take away from serving Christ without being honored by people, is that God doesn’t forget!  That when it is time, the Lord is faithful to remember His servants who served Him for Christ sake, it takes faith and patience but God is faithful! (Hebrews 6:10-12)
