Psalm 136:23It is he who remembered us in our low estate, for his steadfast love endures forever;
If we think about how we want to be perceived, we never consider being at our lowest or looking our worst.  We take pictures over and over, or edit accordingly so we can be remembered at our best!  We generally leave our worst for people we find security in…
I truly believe that though we desire to show people the best of us, nothing makes a person more secure than to know they are loved and respected even at their worst.  Because the test of truly loving somebody is to embrace their whole reality, which includes the bad, which will surface sooner or later!
The Psalmist made sure to record this about our Lord, that He remembers us in our low estate.  So when people “forget us” and prove a shallow love, His love endures forever!  When we experience that kind of love from the Lord or anyone, the irony is that we don’t forget it!  We remember, because to be low is unforgettable, and it can leave emotional “scars” that can last decades…
The key is to seek the Lord to experience that kind of love.  Because though we have memories that remind us of how low we were, to live there mentally is to not be free.  The Psalmist shows us that it is fine to remember it, but let the Lord’s love overcome it!  That the memory of the Lord’s steadfast love is greater than the low estate!
This Psalm encapsulates the gospel in one verse.  That Christ came and died in our “low estate”.  That if we ever feel like we are “too low” to come to God, we don’t understand that Jesus knew this, so He came!  Remove how low you feel from dictating God’s love for you, our nature as sinners is a low estate, which is why Christ died…
