Hugh Hefner lived to the ripe old age of 91. When he died this year, he still had his wealth, women, power, and good things this world has to offer. Yet, he made millions fall with his creation. How many marriages broke up because of his work? How many children grew up in broken families because of him?
Yet, for all intents and purposes, he was a successful man. He was a “blessed” man even. If I told you that someone lived till 91 in relative health, money to last generations, and his name on the New York Times when he died, you’d think he’s immensely blessed. That was Hugh Hefner!
If you grew up in a typical church, you’ve learned that that shouldn’t be possible. A good man lives long and happy. A bad man dies early and unhappy. But Hugh Hefner lived long and seemingly happy. So, what gives? Why would God allow that to such a man? And yet, God takes away early those who could do so much good for the kingdom of God? What gives?
The real punishment does not come until after death. But there is already a punishment for those who live such evil lives. And that is, God hands them over to their stubborn hearts and debased minds.
“My people did not listen to my voice; Israel would not submit to me. So I gave them over to their stubborn hearts, to follow their own counsels (Ps. 81:11-12)
God’s punishment on earth for the wicked is that God gives them over to their evil desires. Before you think, “Well, with punishments like that, who want to be blessed?”, know that with such people, there is no delight in the things that are eternal. The debased minds and hearts are no different than that of animals. Ever fading and boring earthly pleasure is all they know…
Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him;
fret not yourself over the one who prospers in his way,
over the man who carries out evil devices!
But the meek shall inherit the land
and delight themselves in abundant peace.
Ps. 37:7, 11
God gave you something far greater to delight in, of which we only see glimpses of. God will give you Himself as our inheritance. And those who seemed to be “blessed” on earth will eternally look upon us with envy and longing.
Steve Jobs will want what you have.
Hugh Hefner will beg to switch places with you.
Tom Cruise will want your fame.
Beyonce will want your beauty.
