John 4:7-9-There came a woman of Samaria to draw water. Jesus said to her, “Give me a drink.” 8 (For his disciples had gone away into the city to buy food.) 9 The Samaritan woman said to him, “How is it that you, a Jew, ask for a drink from me, a woman of Samaria?” ( For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.)
In raising children I’m still amazed at how impacting parents can be in the limitations, and growth of their child’s thinking in just about everything! I told my youngest daughter one day that what she did “hurt my feelings”, and being 6 years old and never hearing that from me, it made her sensitive to do that again. That expression alone caused her to rethink how she saw me…
People have this same impact when they do or ask us something that seems very contrary to “the norm” in society. Jesus did this with the Samaritan woman at the well. Knowing that a Jewish man, talking to a Samaritan woman in those times was very abnormal. Jesus knowing this, knew His request would cause her to rethink what is “normal” for that day?
The woman reveals how abnormal this dialogue is, by questioning why a Jewish man would ask a Samaritan woman anything? But it was Jesus’ way of breaking away from what was perceived as “normal” in their society. That His question would impact what she “bought into” as well, that Jesus being the Truth, was either wrong for talking to her, or society itself was wrong for the divide between the two races and sexes?
Until we allow Christ to change how we think and operate, we too maybe flowing with “societal norms” that are really contrary to God’s will and purpose in the earth. Jesus drew contention everywhere He went, because as the Truth He challenged what the religious and the unbelieving world declared to be normal. Is God able to challenge you in what you declare to be normal, or are you too stubborn to change what you’ve normalized?
John 4:27-Just then his disciples came back. They marveled that he was talking with a woman, but no one said, “What do you seek?” or, “Why are you talking with her?”
