Is it possible that we have missed a miracle (or miracles!) of God right under our nose? Perhaps in things that we thought, “I guess she wasn’t that sick,” or “What a coincidence!,” or “I don’t understand how that came through!”

Jesus did miracles at times that seemed not to be miracles but of natural causes. Jesus did NOT want every miracle He performed to be known as a miracle. And therefore, many either totally missed it or attributed it to natural cause.

For example, in Luke 8, there is a story of a man whose daughter was very ill. While he was pleading with Jesus to come to his house to heal her, she dies. But Jesus says that she is only sleeping! And then He goes to his house and “wakes” her up. But those who were inside really knew that she was dead. And when He performed the miracle, there were only her family and a few disciples in the house. And then He tells them not to tell anyone about this miracle! So, as far as those who were outside the house who knew about the little girl’s sickness was concerned, this little girl had a very good sleep and woke up to be well. No miracle here. Just a natural getting-well…

I believe God still performs miracles around us that we do not recognize as miracles. The things that we didn’t quite understand or when we thought they had natural explanations, God was behind them and orchestrated them on our behalf. How many of those miracles God has performed, we won’t know until we get to heaven and God reveals to us. But my guess is that they will be far more than we will have guessed.

One other way to look at miracles is this: God is ALWAYS performing miracles. If we define a miracle as God intervening in our world, God is always performing miracles because He is always intervening. Actually, God does not ever let the world run on its own. Not a bird of the air will fall to the ground without God’s will (Matt 10:29). God makes wild lilies grow on the field (Matt 6:28). Even the hairs of our heads are all numbered (Mark 10:30), and they are constantly changing! It’s just that God is usually very consistent – such as raising the Sun every morning, making the rain come in the winter in our state, making our heart beat 70 times a minute, etc. How faithful!

We have a loving heavenly Father who is watching over us. He carries a big stick and it is for our protection from evil. Would you rest in this God believing that He knows the fingerprint of every single one of your fingers?
