Hebrews 11:15-16-If they had been thinking of that land from which they had gone out, they would have had opportunity to return. 16 But as it is, they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared for them a city.
Think about if God gave you an opportunity to go back to a certain age, what would it be? This maybe the only time you think about such a question today, because you are busy moving forward at the age you are! Knowing that you have no opportunity to go back, you press on and move forward…
That is how God wants us to see our “faith walk” with Him. Though it would be nice to experience some of the things we enjoyed in the past, reality is in the present, and the future. Both of which God wants our faith in Him for.
The writer of Hebrews is commending Abraham and the patriarchs not just for their faith, but the heart that must accompany faith. That faith in God must have a desire to move forward to what we don’t know, but trust God for. The uncertainty, the mystery, the fear, all of these things make life exciting and worthwhile when our trust is in God. But what displeases God is when fear causes us to think more about returning to where we came from, than the desire for “a better country”.
The patriarchs guarded themselves from returning back to the place they came from, because they had a greater desire for God, and knew the lifelessness of their own comfort. Until God becomes greater than our own fear, our fear will always have us retreat to what doesn’t require faith. Faith will always face it’s fear and overcome it, because God is revered and honored over the opportunity to go back to what we know…
