Numbers 14:3-4Why is the Lord bringing us into this land, to fall by the sword?  Our wives and our little ones will become prey.  Would it not be better for us to go back to Egypt?” 4 And they said to one another, “Let us choose a leader and go back to Egypt.”

There are things you can start in life, and then second guess whether or not you should continue, or go back to what you were doing before.  Hobbies can be like that, fitness goals certainly can be like that, even careers.  But some things are not “start and quit” “activities”.  Like getting married, raising kids, and walking with Jesus…
One of the temptations that can plague our hearts as Christians, is whether or not we can finish the race we set out to run.  Life has a way of challenging whether or not we have the endurance to push through and progress, or shrink back and quit.  It is in these tough times that you realize that our gracious Lord is our strength and nothing else…
These Israelites came to a point in the wilderness, where it exposed the notion of whether we can quit following God and still have real faith.  Like them, we all have fears of what is next when we are called to trust God.  But what should be in the heart of every believer is that there is nothing to go back to!  So instead of being paralyzed by fear, God gives us the courage in His grace to continue on!
As long as we think we have an option in the Christian life to go back to a life of bondage as slaves to sin, we really can’t affirm real confidence that Christ saved us.  To actually be set free by Jesus means, that though life with Him may get difficult, bondage and slavery should never be the persistent cry of our hearts to go back to!  Something in our lives remains, that makes us never forget just how miserable going “back to Egypt” and bondage would be!
In His Love, LD
