Psalm 22:2-4
2 O my God, I cry by day, but you do not answer,
and by night, but I find no rest.
2 O my God, I cry by day, but you do not answer,
and by night, but I find no rest.
3 Yet you are holy,
enthroned on the praises of Israel.
4 In you our fathers trusted;
they trusted, and you delivered them.
enthroned on the praises of Israel.
4 In you our fathers trusted;
they trusted, and you delivered them.
I think the question “why” or “why not” maybe the most redundant response you hear when parenting, teaching, or mentoring young children. In one aspect it’s good for them to ask, so they can be taught. But it becomes a problem when their question of why, is really questioning our reason for not giving them what they want, when they want it…
Of course you don’t have to be a young child to have this same kind of attitude towards God and people. The Psalmist shows that his pleas seems to be falling on “deaf ears” with God, wondering why is there no answer? But what he doesn’t do is crucial for us to learn. He does not call into question the character of God in not answering his prayer…
The Psalmist has come to the place where though he maybe frustrated, discouraged, and even angry at why no answer, he doesn’t “cross the line”
and question whether God is faithful and trustworthy. It is actually his trust in God that causes him to accept no, and realize he must grow more in his trust of God, because of His impeccable character towards him all his life!
Do you find yourself calling God’s character into question, rather than your own faith and trust when God doesn’t answer you? I pray that my kids grow to the point that they can accept no and my reasoning for it, because I want what is best for them, but also to learn to grow in trust of my ways and timing. I truly believe that is the heart that God wants for us, like the Psalmist.
In His Love, Ld
