(I didn’t send out any devotionals last week due to our vacation in D.C…)
My family and I just came back from vacationing in Washington D.C., and one of the places we visited was Mount Vernon – the home of George Washington, our first president. We spent good half a day sauntering about his vast estate to learn about the man. One thing that he did that earned my trust is the way he finished his term. He could’ve been king of the U.S. and become a dictator for all his life, but he gave up that right, essentially setting a precedent for all the others to follow. Unless you are from another country, you do not understand how rare that is…! Power is not easily given up.
Now, juxtapose it with a few stories my friends, whom I have met up, told me. They have left their respective churches because they were disappointed in the leadership. They simply couldn’t trust them. Not with money, nor with their spiritual well-being. It seemed to them that they (their church leaders) were more concerned about building their own kingdom than God’s kingdom.
That’s why I find great comfort when Jesus said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me…” (Matthew 29:18). I like the fact that Jesus is in charge. I wouldn’t want anyone else to be in charge but Him! Not myself, not George Washington, not even my parents, but Jesus! Why? Because He was the only One who left heaven, humbled Himself to be our equal, and furthermore, died in my place to save me unto Himself. If He had done that, then He definitely earned my trust! Much much more than what George Washington did in giving up his presidency!
Jesus is in charge of your life, brothers and sisters! Not Satan. Not some apathetic force. Not chance. But Jesus who did the unthinkable for you! “He who did not spare His own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things?” (Romans 8:32)
Jesus is in charge of your financial woes.
Jesus is in charge of your family.
Jesus is in charge of your future.
Jesus is in charge of your marriage (or lack thereof)
Jesus is in charge of every hair on your head! (He knows exactly how many I have lost! =))
“ALL authority in heaven and on earth…”
Trust Him and rejoice!
