Proverbs 27:12–The prudent sees danger and hides himself, but the simple go on and suffer for it.
Throughout the Bible, God uses a lot of metaphors regarding our eyesight. Not just dealing with people who are physically unable to see, but spiritually blind. Void of the light of Christ, and unable to see in the midst of darkness…
So when you read a proverb like this one, so straightforward and sensible, it could be easy to bypass it’s significance. But to be “prudent” is to have insight, taking time to consider, instead of being “simple” with no insight, and not considering anything. The difference between the two is that the prudent “sees” and the simple do not.
To have the light of Christ, and walk in fellowship with Him is to be led by Him, and see the “danger” of our sin. But when we are not in right fellowship with Him, in being led by His light, we don’t “see” the danger before us. So like the simple in our pride, we blindly go on and “suffer for it”.
Without walking in the light of Christ we have no insight into our sinful hearts and the “dangers” our sin leads us into. Insight without Christ is to be led by our pride, blind and unaware of potential sufferings we cause ourselves and others. So for “safety”, it takes us continuously recalling the times we suffered in our “simplicity”, because we didn’t humble ourselves and seek insight from the Lord.
