Being a teacher, I’m reminded of my childhood years waiting eagerly for the summer break. I could endure the restrictions and unpleasant discipline that came with being in school if I could see the light at the end of the tunnel. I am feeling that all over again as a teacher. Only 11 more days of school left as of this writing!!

C. S. Lewis points out in his autobiographical book, ‘Surprised by Joy,’ that this process of a school boy waiting for the summer rest trains us to wait for our heavenly rest. We can endure the restrictions and unpleasant discipline that is this world if we could see the light at the end of the tunnel. Especially, those of us who are older, the finish line is almost there and we want to finish strong!

Caleb says, “.. So here I am today, 85 years old! I am still as strong today as the day Moses sent me out… Now give me this hill country that the Lord promised me that day…. I will drive them out just as he said.” (Joshua 14:10-12)

Find your strength and joy in God. Turn off the things that will sap your spiritual energy and fervor even if they are not evil in and of themselves. Let’s finish strong!
