On day one, a wise teacher will clearly establish rules and expectations with his students. A teacher who does not do that only goes on the frustrate the well-meaning students as well as himself. Now, it is true that most young people hate rules. Until they get exposed to an environment where there is no rule! Once they experience chaos and disorderliness that come with no rules, they begin to understand that some rules are good!

Good rules are there to protect and promote health and longevity. For example, have you ever been on the road forever because a traffic light was out? That traffic light, which seemed like an impediment to our freedom, actually saves us time and headaches.

I’m reminded of God’s goodness to us as I read over the rules/laws in the book of Deuteronomy. For example, “When a man is newly married, he shall not go out with the army or be liable for any other public duty. He shall be free at home one year to be happy with his wife whom he has taken.” (Deut 24:5)

This is a very generous proposition for the newly married! Even the U.S. in the 21st century doesn’t offer such generous benefits. God gave us common grace for our own protection and well-being.

God is good. He has our best interest in mind. Let’s be happy to be in His will.
