I have several roles I’m fulfilling, two of which are teacher and son. I am a math teacher at a high school. I am also a son to my parents. However, those two roles are very different. Namely, one is conditional, and the other is not.
My being a teacher is conditional upon my performance. I get evaluated by my superiors several times a year. Only when I perform and meet the “conditions”, will I be able to keep my job.
My being a son to my parents is not conditional. I am their son no matter how I perform as their son. I do check in on them and take them to doctor’s visits and grocery shopping, but those are SIGNS that I’m their son rather than conditions to keep being their son.
When God called Abraham and promised him untold blessings, it was NOT conditional. Nowhere in the Bible does God say to Abraham, “If you live such and such a way, will I keep my end of the bargain.” However, as a sign of this covenant for Abraham to remember, God tells him to circumcise himself and those of his household, which Abraham gladly does.
Our living a holy and godly lives are not a condition upon which we keep being God’s children. They are signs of our belonging to God’s household.
God’s covenant (promise) with us is unconditional. If you messed up, come back to God once more. Your coming back to God is a sign that you are His.
