When a young adult member told me that he gets exhausted from work, I told him to start exercising and to eat better. I did NOT suggest him to give himself to more prayer and Bible reading. Prayer and Bible reading are not answers to all our problems (although they will indeed prevent so many potential problems)!
Being spiritual doesn’t mean to ignore the physical. All of our being – spiritual, physical, emotional – belong to God and therefore, we must “exercise” all those parts to the glory of God.
Paul says to Timothy, “Don’t continue drinking only water, but use a little wine because of your stomach and your frequent illnesses.” 1 Tim. 5:23.Back then, drinking-water wasn’t very pure and adding a little of alcohol had the purifying effect. Paul recommends this practice to Timothy for health benefits.
This is very surprising given the fact that Paul had the gift of healing. His shadows would even heal people. However, to Timothy, he suggests a very practical and mundane remedy. When you get sick, take some medicine. When you get pudgy, exercise! When you are emotionally spent, do what refreshes you. etc.
God is the God of our physical, emotional, and spiritual selves. Let us be good stewards of all of them!
