God is not a reluctant forgiver. He jumps at the chance to forgive and relent. No matter how bad you have been or what your conscience tells you, come to God and He will forgive.
Ahab was an evil man. The Bible says that there was not a man as evil as he was. He murdered, cheated, and led many astray as the king of Israel. And God was going to destroy him immediately and utterly. And he sends a prophet to tell him this. But Ahab does the unexpected. He repents! He tears his clothes, puts on sackcloth and fasts! When God sees this, He relents and promises that He will not bring the disaster to him while he’s living. (1 King 21:29)
If I were God, I would’ve said, “Too late!”, and destroyed him! But God doesn’t. At the first sign of humility, God relents and forgives. This is again repeated in the story of the prodigal son. Although the son had done nothing to deserve anything good, just at the minimal effort of walking back home, the father welcomes him and restores to him his rightful position as the heir.
We cannot out-sin God’s grace. No matter what we have done, how evil we have been, how unforgivable we are to ourselves, God can and will forgive when we come to Him in humility.
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9The only unforgivable sin is if we do NOT come to God to be forgiven. It is the thinking, “God cannot forgive me after what I’ve done.” Sin is not our problem. It is the refusal to come to God that is our problem
