When you talk to yourself, what do you say? If you are like me, it’s often, “How stupid of you to do that? What is wrong with you? Seriously? Are you really that dumb???”
The things I would never say to others, I say to myself. I beat myself up far more than I’ve ever beaten up anyone else. And if I know human nature, you are probably no different.
But how often do you speak words of encouragement and advice to yourself? Listen to how David talks to himself:
Rest in God alone, my soul, for my hope comes from him.He alone is my rock and my salvation,my stronghold; I will not be shaken. Psalm 62:5-6
He’s speaking to himself as if a father to a son or an older brother to a younger brother. He’s speaking words of encouragement and wisdom to himself based on the gospel!
Oh, how we need to do that! We are a new creation in Christ and therefore, we must not be led by the shadow of the sinful nature that is in us. Rather, we must lead ourselves through the gospel light. Speak words of encouragement and hope to our own hearts!
You are ones for whom Christ died. You are worth more than a million universes. Don’t degrade yourself with words or actions.
