All sins trace back to this one root: God is not enough.
When I am tempted to sin is when I’m not satisfied with my current circumstances. A silly example, but I was pretty stressed out yesterday. To relieve some of the stress, I grabbed my daughter’s Nintendo Switch and started playing Galaga. It’s an old video game that I used to play when I was little. But I kept on dying in early stages and I got so mad that I wanted to throw the controller at the TV screen and yell out some cuss words! (So much for relieving stress!)
What was I displaying? A dissatisfaction in God. I was saying with my action, “Why am I still so bad at this game that I’ve been playing ever since I was little? Who made me thus? God!” So, God is the one to blame ultimately…
It can get far more serious.
- We get drunk because we are not satisfied with the circumstances that God has put us in.
- We overeat because we are depressed that we have gained weight. (Blaming God for our slow metabolism)
- We overspend to compensate for some type of complex in our lives.
- We divorce because the wife God has given to us does not satisfy us anymore.
- We turn to drugs to help us forget the miseries of life.
And the people of Israel also wept again and said, “Oh that we had meat to eat! 5 We remember the fish we ate in Egypt that cost nothing, the cucumbers, the melons, the leeks, the onions, and the garlic. 6 But now our strength is dried up, and there is nothing at all but this manna to look at.” Number 11:4-6
God has provided everything they needed for them and yet they were complaining. Yes, it is true, it was no Hyatt or Hilton, but they weren’t slaves anymore and on their way to the promised land. But they continued to complain and be dissatisfied with what God provided!
Sin is unbelief. Unbelief is thinking and acting God is not enough.
If you are a child of God, you are where you are because it is what is best for you. Do you believe it? (Romans 8:28)
A person who is perfectly happy in God will never sin.
