Please compare yourself to others!
I know that sounds like a contradiction to everything I’ve been saying. I’ve decried the evils of social media and how it stirs up envy and jealousy more than once. So, why am I now saying that we should compare ourselves to others?
Because that’s what the Bible tells us to do!
“Resist him (the devil), firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your fellow believers throughout the world.” 1 Peter 5:9
It says we are to know that our fellow believers all over the world are suffering. In other words, we are to look to their suffering and be encouraged to keep our own faith even in the midst of our own suffering.
So, yes, please do compare. But not with those who are comfortable, prosperous, accomplished, and enjoying life without God, but with those who are suffering for the name of Jesus, toiling for the kingdom, and steadfast in their walk with Him.
When was the last time you read a post on Facebook of a fellow believer suffering terribly for the name of Christ but being strong in the faith?
If you are going to be on social media, Christian, share your failures. Share your heartaches. Share your unsatisfied desires. Then, share that Christ is the only hope.
Would a fellow believer be more encouraged on social media you went to a fancy restaurant for your birthday congratulated by a hundred people, or you thanked God for your life even though no one remembered your birthday?
