Luke 4:34–“Ha! What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are— the Holy One of God.”
Before this passage, Jesus had just been rejected by His hometown of Nazareth from the people within the synagogue, who heard Him teach the Word. They go on to be offended at His testimony, because they knew Him as Joseph’s son not the Son of God…
After being rejected in Nazareth, Jesus goes to Galilee to teach in a synagogue and finds a man with a demon. Here we see the distinction between religious people who think they serve God, but don’t truly know or receive Him. Compared to the demons who know Jesus truly, and believe in His power, but are clearly against Him and God’s people…
If you were to ask which one is more acceptable in society today, surely it would be the people in Nazareth, because at least they are in the synagogue on the Sabbath! But these were the people who not only rejected Jesus and were offended at Him, but tried to throw Him off a cliff for being Who He was! (Luke 4:29)
Yet the demons are the ones that people respect in reality. Because in the “sincere” pride of the demons, you know where they stand. They don’t want any allegiance with Jesus, but respect Who He is, and know what He is capable of. The people in Nazareth are the least respected, because in their religious pride they pretend they know who God is, but are secretly against Him and the people who truly believe. (Luke 13:34, Philippians 3:17-19)
Pretending to be something we are not brings disdain, because nobody wants to be betrayed. Fooled to think we are this way, when in reality we are that. This is actually the fight for us Christians. Because we still fight against the flesh that desires evil, but in our spirit we want to please Jesus. The fight for honesty and sincerity starts with true worship. Calling out our evil and repenting, that we can be filled with the Spirit, makes it clear where our allegiance lies, proving genuine faith in Christ…(1 Corinthians 5:8, 2 Corinthians 1:12)
