As I read the psalms written by David, I am struck by how much delight David seemed to be having in the law. He says phrases like, “I love your law,” “I delight in your law,” “I meditate on it day and night,” “How perfect is your law!” I’ve read the same law that he read (namely the first five books of the Bible), and I don’t remember getting that excited about them. I think there is some wisdom and care in it, but I’m not to the point of praising it “excessively” like David. I’m certainly not fawning over it to the point of using the kind of words he did to describe it.

Perhaps that speaks to the calloused nature of my heart. If my eyes and hearts were open like David’s, perhaps I would see more of beauty and delight in it like he did. I certainly see some of what David talked about in the entirety of the Bible. I still think the greatest argument for the existence of God is how everything is aligned beautifully and miraculously to lift up the name of Jesus. However, I have a hard time drawing much delight from the first 5 books of the Bible.

But therein lies the point. If David drew that much pleasure and delight in those first 5 books, how much more delight we should be drawing from the entire Bible. So much more has been revealed to us than to David. David has only gone through the ticket booth and seen the rollercoasters from afar and got excited. We have not only gotten in, but gotten on the rollercoaster and rode it a few times already if we have been walking with Jesus a while.

Oh, help our dull hearts, Lord! Make it sensitive to your delights! Let us feel the delight and see the beauty of your face in your word!
