As a teacher, I have to admit that there are students that I “favor.” I know we are not supposed to favor anyone above others, but can we help it if we happen to like certain students because of their personality and traits? Of course we are not supposed to show “favoritism” as in, treat some persons better than others, but when our hearts go toward a certain person more than others, then it’s only natural.

God has His favorites. David was one of them. And I’m beginning to see why that might have been so. As I’m reading through the psalms that David wrote, his heart quite literally sang to the Lord! The psalms are his love songs to God. The way today’s pop artists sing about their significant other, David was writing and singing these love songs about and to God. Listen to a portion:

Lord, save us!

Lord, grant us success!

You are my God, and I will praise you;

you are my God, and I will exalt you.

Give thanks to the Lord, for he is god;

his love endures forever.

(Psalm 118:25, 26-29)

If there is a student that delights in what I tell him to do, asks for advice, strives to get better at the subject, then naturally I will favor him. This is what David did with God. Contrastingly, I have not read anywhere in the Bible a song written by King Saul to God. His heart did not “sing” to God because he had no love for God.

“Those who honor me, I will honor…” 1 Sam 2:30

Go ahead! Be favored by God! Sing to him a song. Not just songs of praise, but also songs of lament and difficulties. As long as they are directed to God and not against Him, God will hear and be sympathetic.
