1 Kings 19:5-6-And he lay down and slept under a broom tree. And behold, an angel touched him and said to him, “Arise and eat.” 6 And he looked, and behold, there was at his head a cake baked on hot stones and a jar of water. And he ate and drank and lay down again.
One of the things that being threatened does, is cause what pyschology would call a “fight or flight” response. That our natural instinct is to preserve ourselves when we feel threatened. Though we usually confine this response to a physical reaction, it can be emotional and spiritual…
The context of the passage is about the prophet Elijah, who destroyed the prophets of the false god Baal. Elijah then gets threatened by Jezebel, that she is going to do to him, what he did to them! In a panic, Elijah physically flees to the wilderness under a broom tree, where he spiritually wants to flee his call from God…(1 Kings 19:1-5)
Yet what is amazing, is to see God’s faithfulness even when we are faithless! In spite of Elijah sulking in his depression, the Lord sends ministers of His presence to feed him for a purpose, not for him to keep sulking. God continues to show us, that it is His willingness to never leave or forsake us, that gives us the grace to continue in His purpose…(Hebrews 13:5. Matthew 28:20, 2 Timothy 2:13)
When we are faithless, it keeps us from seeing how the Lord is continually blessing us, as we sulk in disappointments and frustrations. Like Elijah, faithlessness causes us to be frustrated over what we didn’t expect, and ungrateful for what God is doing, and who He is. Faithlessness causes us to take for granted, the things God doesn’t have to do at all! Fight to find gratitude in Jesus and His loving patience, that enables us to sulk in unbelief, until we accept the grace to go forth in His purpose.(1 Kings 19:15-18)
