Galatians 5:30But what does the Scripture say? “Cast out the slave woman and her son, for the son of the slave woman shall not inherit with the son of the free woman.”

If you recall the story of Abraham, Sarah, and their servant Hagar.  God promised Abraham a child, that both he and Sarah felt they were too old to conceive.  So in their struggle to trust God, they invited Hagar into the plan to be the “carrier of the promise”, which created a mess…
Abraham, like us, had a hard time with believing God would do what He promised when overwhelmed by circumstances, his age, his wife’s age, the convenience of Hagar.  But in Abraham’s haste to make provisions for God, he invited Hagar and underestimates his own attachment to her, when God calls on him to cast her out!
One of the things that is hard to estimate when we disobey God, is the emotional attachment to the things that don’t belong in our life.  In no way was Abraham led by God to sleep with his servant, and have a “promise child”.  Now Abraham is having a difficult time casting out someone who never belonged in the situation…(Genesis 21:10-12)
One of the more difficult things to do, is to be honest with yourself, when God knows you are struggling with emotional attachment to what doesn’t belong.  As difficult as it may have been for Abraham to cast out a woman he cared about, she represented bondage in his ways, not freedom in God.
Examine yourself and have the courage to locate, what is it that you are emotionally tied to that doesn’t belong?  It is the difference between living in freedom in the Spirit or bondage in our old ways.
