Would you be happier if God made much of you (you becoming famous, for example) or if God made much of Himself (Him becoming famous) through you?

One of the sure signs of our growth in Christ is that we become happier when God is made much of rather than ourselves. We are happier when we see people coming to God and dedicating their lives to Him, more so than their loyalty and friendship to us. It is not unlike my relationship with my family. I’d much rather that people praise my wife or children than they praise me. I am happier when they are praised rather than myself. If myself is praised at the expense of their being praised, then I don’t want it! So, as our love grows for God, we would rather have God be praised and not us. And if we are praised and not God, then we don’t want it!

May God be gracious to us and bless us

and make his face to shine upon us, Selah

that your way may be know on earth,

your saving power among all nations.

Let the people praise you, O God;

let all the peoples praise you!

Ps 67:1-3

This psalmist experienced supreme  happiness since he knew happiness beyond simply him being praised. He desired that God be praised more than himself. He knew the secret of true happiness!

Would you praise God for placing you exactly where He wants you today?
