The gospel is not like information we need to hear once, but like a beautiful song we need to hear over and over.

I realized this as I was driving to work, listening to Dr. Martyn Lloyd Jones, an old Scottish preacher. The recording was so old that it was originally recorded on paper tape before the days of cassette. But the message was both so new and so old. It was the gospel message of Jesus paying for my sins and giving me the credit for His perfect life. And as I listened, I could feel my spirit rise up and praise God in gratitude for what Christ has done for me.

Now, I KNOW the gospel message. I’ve heard it a thousand times and I’ve preached it as many times. But it’s not like information in that it has a refreshing effect. The information that I already know given to me over and over would be nagging and infuriating. But a beautiful song played to me will restore my soul. The gospel is that music. The gospel is the food when I’m famished. The gospel is the water when I’m thirsty. There really is nothing like it on earth! How sweet to hear that my worth does not lie in my achievement but in Christ’s achievement. How uplifting to hear that God loves me in spite of my faults and failures rather than because of it!

“For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.” 2 Cor. 5:21

Hear the gospel preached this Sunday by participating in worship. And preach the gospel to your own soul daily!
