If God is the engine of our salvation, then we are the wheels. If God is the electricity, we are the appliances. God is the One who works in His salvation, and we are the ones who work out that salvation.

“Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.” Philippians 2:12-13

There is no such thing as a passive Christian. One who does not work out his salvation is dead (James 2). And what does working out our salvation look like?

“Do all things without grumbling or disputing, that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world, holding fast to the word of life…” Phil. 2:14-16

A summary would be – Striving to be holy by looking to Jesus.

Again, if you are not striving, you are dead. Your striving to be holy is a sign that God is working in His salvation in you. Therefore, make your salvation sure by striving to be pure, holy, godly, etc.

Please do not give into the thinking, “I know I’m saved because I accepted Jesus years ago. Even though right now I’m not living like a Christian, I know God will always forgive me and accept me.”

That is a very dangerous position to be in. You have no proof that you are saved! The greatest and the only proof that you are in Him is that God is working in you so that you are working out through good works.
