Deuteronomy 25:17-19-“Remember what Amalek did to you on the way as you came out of Egypt, 18 how he attacked you on the way when you were faint and weary, and cut off your tail, those who were lagging behind you, and he did not fear God.

I’ve realized from my own experiences and now raising my own children, that you can teach morals, but character is something that is developed and expressed by time, and ultimately God. Character is the kind of thing you do because you know in your heart it’s right to do, and don’t need anyone to coerce you to do it, it has become the fabric of who you are. So helping an old lady across the street may not be “a moral rule”, but it does show character… (Romans 5:4).

I believe what God uses “to forge” our character towards other people is recalling how good God has been to us. This helps us be “a leader” in love, instead of waiting on people to treat us a certain way so we can love them back. We then set the example of what character looks like, by not following people’s lead, but God’s love in our heart towards us! If not, we will always measure the output of our love by how someone is treating us, that’s conditional, and that’s not how God is loving us…

The character to do what is right breaks down in us all, but do you dig deep enough to where the breakdown occurs? The reason is our lack of reverence for God. Moses is describing in this passage how Amalek had no fear of God, and in doing so treated the Israelites with no compassion, and mercilessly attacked them while weary!

So the question is, what stops you from taking advantage of people and situations, that may not have a moral code of “do’s and don’ts”, but reveal an option of what you should do? Our decision must either be according to what God expects in reverence for Him and a love for people, or according to our own “moral code”, that justifies what we want to do in irreverence, and a lack of character…
