1 John 3:1,3See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him…3 And everyone who thus hopes in him purifies himself as he is pure.
Although respect, reverence, and fear are things that are popular and very influential in swaying people to obey, do their job, honor the country, etc.  In the world we can expect this because they don’t know God, the source of love.  But for Christians, love must be our main source of influence even more than our desire to be respected…
What inevitably scares a child or an employee to do what is right is the consequences of not being respectful.  But does that fear or respect actually change a person?  God knows, that what inevitably needs to first change in a person is not their behavior, but their heart.  For a husband to demand respect from his wife, may cause him to evoke fear to control, but that wouldn’t be the change that he would want if he really loved her…
This is why Jesus gave us the display of love on the cross, that the means of changing a person’s heart is not demanding respect, but walking in love at every chance they get. That the person witnessing such love would want to change and respect such a person, because of the love being shown.
Being redeemed from the world, the desire to achieve and be well-respected is not bad, unless that is the ultimate goal of our life and relationships.  Because that is when we are our own god!  But when we recognize the lavish love the Father has given us, we then desire to “purify ourselves” and honor Him as He deserves. We then allow love to be the main source of our influence, because that is what is influencing us.
