John 4:32-35But he said to them, “I have food to eat that you do not know about.”  33 So the disciples said to one another, “Has anyone brought him something to eat?” 34 Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to accomplish his work.

As great it is to be served and blessed by people in our lives, the goodness of people can cause us to settle.  Of course we should appreciate and show our gratitude to such people, but if we don’t live like they are limited, we will soon have great resentment towards them not being enough…

If you think about the amount of time the disciples spent with Jesus, walking with Him probably everyday for three years.  We can conclude that they grew very close to Him and each other, almost to the point that they thought they needed to provide for Him if He needed something.  They showed how at times they forgot, or just didn’t realize, that Jesus had all His needs met through God the Father.

This can happen to any of us when we are in close relationships.  That we can have a tendency to begin looking at our needs for love, attention, provisions, and security to be wrapped up in a person who is limited!  Jesus had no need to get food from His disciples, because if He needed anything, He knew that what they had to offer wasn’t going to feed His true need.

Jesus’ answer to His disciples was to show them that though temporary needs matter, like food, they are limited to the depths we yearn for to be satisfied.  People cannot satisfy our souls, nor can money, or prestige of any kind.  Though we tend to acknowledge this as Christians, if we are carrying disappointment in our lives, it maybe an indication that we expecting to be satisfied by what is limited, and not God?

In His Love, LD
