(I’m sorry. I dropped the ball on Wednesday and did not send you a devotional…)

We live in such a bipolar world. There is much evil in this world. But there is also much good in this world, too.

Yesterday, I went to a funeral of a man who battled cancer for years. He has finally succumbed to it and lost the battle. It was open casket, and it was surreal seeing this man who once used to be strong and vibrant, laying there lifeless… Then, immediately after, I went to a wedding rehearsal of a young lady and her fiance whose wedding I will be officiating this Saturday. There, it was full of life! All of the groomsmen and bridesmaids were so young and vibrant. It was a reunion of a sort for them, (and me too) and everyone was in a happy mood.

Driving back, which was a long drive and thus gave time to reflect, I couldn’t help but think that that one day described our entire lifetime here on earth. Full of joy and laughter, but also full of sorrows and weeping as well… And all of us, whether Christians or not, long for the day when it will only be filled with joy and laughter and not the other part.

I know no other world view that describes the bipolar nature of this world better than the biblical view. We were created to be happy in God forever. We were placed in the Garden of Eden that only contained joy and laughter. But we decided to take God’s place and go our own way in sin. Now, we have lost the source of goodness in God and filled the earth and our own hearts too with the horrible distortion of that which was perfect. Sorrows entered and so did death. We’d do anything to shake those off our lives, but we are unable…

That is why Jesus came. To restore joy and laughter back to the world. And do away with sorrows and death forever.

Trying to find happiness without Jesus is like trying to find breath without air. Jesus said, “I have come that you may have life and have it to the full!” (John 10:10).  Would you seek this Jesus in your Bible? Would you seek Him in worship with other believers this Sunday? Would you seek Him in your private prayer?
