Hebrews 11:9-10-By faith he went to live in the land of promise, as in a foreign land, living in tents with Isaac and Jacob, heirs with him of the same promise. 10 For he was looking forward to the city that has foundations, whose designer and builder is God.
Think about what enables you to move on from things and hold them “loosely”, as opposed to never letting things go? What do you see as permanent, and what do you see as temporary? The way we should treat Jesus, a marriage, and our children are permanent and for life, while pretty much everything else is transient or temporary. We change jobs, churches, friends, even our minds, all things that we know can change and at times need to change.

It is important to know what is temporary and what you should hold onto. God being the One we should look to for wisdom in such things. In this passage the writer of Hebrews commends Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, the patriarchs of faith with their mentality towards life while walking with God. They made “tents” in the desert because they knew a tent was temporary, God was permanent. So what are things we treat as “permanent” that should be temporary, causing us to compromise God and His vision?

The thing that Abraham set in motion as a legacy of faith to fulfill God’s promise was a “tent mindset”. The Bible says Abraham left his kindred, which means he left everything he was familiar with to follow God. He didn’t let his mind stay stuck in a lifestyle that would contradict God’s call to faith and obedience. Abraham had a “tent mentality” towards life, so he didn’t build a house where a tent belonged. He grew out of Haran where he was raised, he had no taste for Sodom and Gomorrah which God was going to destroy, he just kept renewing his mind to the new place God was bringing him to by faith…

The thinking that says, “if I just get this or that, I will be satisfied” is not a tent mentality. A tent mentality knows that the temporary thing or destination is not the goal. No matter how comfortable it is, it’s a tent! Permanence and security is in Jesus and what He is doing, which means some things you have to leave to experience Him as that! Like a tent, pray for the wisdom to know when and what to “pack up and move”. It maybe a mindset that keeps you from experiencing more of God and what He wants to reveal in your life!
