Have you ever gone back on your resolve, such as your New Year’s resolution, and felt horrible about it?

You are not alone. I think we make plenty of resolutions in our life time, but we do not end up keeping most of them. But at the time we were making the resolve, we were so sure that we would keep up with it. But with time, that resolve gets less resolute and after enough time, we have broken that resolve… What that tells us is that we do not know ourselves very well. And also, our will power is not as strong as we think it is. That is why we need Jesus. We need Him to strengthen us to do that which our will power alone cannot do.
Peter was so sure that he would stay faithful to Jesus – “Peter said to [Jesus], ‘Even though they all fall away, I will not.‘” He thought he could even die for Jesus. But only a few hours away, when the soldiers came in to take Jesus away, Peter denies Jesus. Peter didn’t know himself very well. He overestimated himself. But Jesus didn’t! Jesus said to Peter, “Truly, I tell you, this very night, before the rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times.” And it happened exactly like Jesus predicted. In other words, Jesus knows us better than we know ourselves. Jesus does not overestimate us. We consistently overestimate our will power and find ourselves feeling guilty (when we fail) or impotent (when we fail repeatedly). But Jesus knew all this about Peter and yet still loved him!
Jesus knows all about your past failures, your present failure, and even your future failures! Yet, He still loves you. He still loves me!
Revel in this.
