We, Christians, are to be contributors rather than consumers. We are to be contributors to the city that we are living in, working for the good of the city and praying for its welfare. That is what good citizens of the kingdom of God do for the kingdom of men.

“But seek for the welfare of the city where I have sent you into exile, and pray to the Lord on its behalf, for in its welfare you will find your welfare.” Jeremiah 29:7

Simply put, Christians should be model citizens who are valuable members of the society. Although we ultimately work for the eternal kingdom, we are also to seek for the good of the temporary kingdom that we are physically located in. That means we work hard to keep the economy growing in our city. Buy houses and plant gardens to keep them green. Shop locally to contribute to businesses to keep them in business. Live within means so that you do not become reliant upon the government to assist you.

All of this will glorify God. After all, if we are terrible citizens who only have their “heads in the cloud” and neglect the earthly kingdom, why would they be attracted to our God who sent His Son to redeem this world?
