What is it all for? How often do you question what your life is really about?

As you go through the daily grind of going to work, fighting traffic, wrestling with co-workers, meeting the deadline, fighting traffic on the way home, taking care of family, checking in online, going to sleep, only to repeat the whole thing over again the next day and the next day and the next day…

What is all for? Do you know the purpose of your life? Do you know the meaning of life? Could you verbalize it?

Let me suggest one: The meaning of life is to enjoy Christ and show Him to be our supreme pleasure.

John Piper says, “God is most glorified in me when I am most satisfied in Him.” Westminster catechism says, “The chief end of man is to glorify God and to enjoy Him forever.”

[8] Above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since love covers a multitude of sins. [9] Show hospitality to one another without grumbling. [10] As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace: [11] whoever speaks, as one who speaks oracles of God; whoever serves, as one who serves by the strength that God supplies—in order that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ. To him belong glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen. (1 Peter 4:8-11)

Our purpose is to glorify God. (Sorry, we don’t come up with our own purposes. We DO NOT determine our own meaning of life! It is NOT right to think, “We must each determine our own meaning.”) And what will glorify God most? When we are supremely satisfied in Him! When we find our greatest pleasure in Him! That is what the church is about. That is what our families are about. That is what work is about. That is what marriages are about. That is what friendships are about. Through all these institutions, we are to show Christ as supreme and find our joy in Him.

In your commute to work, making dinner for you family, changing your kids’ diapers, remember that your purpose in them is to enjoy Jesus and to show Him to be greater. Jesus is training you to rule the earth…
