“The human heart is an idol factory,” John Calvin said. I can’t tell you how true that is looking into my own heart. God has given me so much – embarrassingly so, which I deserved none – and yet I am still look for more! How do I know? Because I am not content with what I have. I’m constantly looking to buy or upgrade that will make my life “better.” I am embarrassed to admit how much time I waste just browsing things that I’d like to buy but don’t have the money for. You’d think that if I know I will never buy it because the fund isn’t there, I should stop looking, but I don’t!!! My heart is an idol factory! It produces desires day in and day out that need to be met! Who or what could ever meet it? (Apparently not my family, friends, house, car, U.S. citizenship, and my job since I have them all and I still want more!)

So the Hebrew writer says, “Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” Hebrews 13:5

Have you noticed what he says is the reason why we can be content with what we have? “I will never leave you nor forsake you!” Which means the reason why we should be content is because we have God Himself! We have God as our inheritance who will never leave us nor forsake us. And that is what we find contentment in!

It is difficult looking to God whom we cannot see and be content in Him, isn’t it? But persevere. Keep your faith to the end. One day, He will become more real than the computer you are reading this devotional from…
