Imagine a world where human bodies were the most solid objects. Not that other objects became soft, but our bodies simply became more solid. What if we became invincible, in other words? How would that world be different from this one?
First, we wouldn’t have to work. Don’t we work so that we can put food on the table, clothes on our backs, and shelter over our heads? And don’t we do that because we are afraid of dying? But in that world, we cannot die! So, no need to work.
– No fears for our children. They can play on the highway if they want since no car can harm them.
– No military personnel. Sorry, no need since war would be meaningless.
– Lawyers, doctors, bankers, etc would also lose their jobs since deathless world would render them meaningless.
– No gangs, no terrorists, no abusers, no criminals – everything that arose based on fear of death would disappear.
Why such silly imagination?
Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery. (Hebrews 2:14-15 ESV)
Aren’t most of what we do arose because of our fear of death? If we couldn’t die, we would live in a drastically different world!
That would in fact be heaven.
But it would also be hell.
Human bodies ARE the only things that will last forever. God, in the end, will recreate them indestructible, either to be happy forever in heaven or miserable forever in hell.
“There are no ordinary people. You have never talked to a mere mortal. Nations, cultures, arts, civilizations – these are mortal, and their life is to ours as the life of a gnat. But it is immortals whom we joke with, work with, marry, snub and exploit – immortal horrors or everlasting splendors.” – C. S. Lewis
Your job ultimately doesn’t matter. But how you treat those at your job matters infinitely more. (It’s the little things for the “little” people that matters!)
