John 4:31-35Meanwhile the disciples were urging him, saying, “Rabbi, eat.” 32 But he said to them, “I have food to eat that you do not know about.”  33 So the disciples said to one another, “Has anyone brought him something to eat?” 34 Jesus said to them,“My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to accomplish his work.

In conclusion of what the disciples missed with Jesus and “the woman at the well” is the exchange of physical bondage and spiritual fulfillment.  The disciples come to Jesus believing that He needs physical nourishment, and He does being human, but He uses this natural dilemma to teach a spiritual lesson.  That what sustains Him to be truly fulfilled in life is not physical nourishment or physical fulfillment of any kind, but to do the will of God!

As a disciple they are miffed at such a response because they are grossly practical and reveal just how much they related to Jesus.  But in their comfort of His humanity, He reminded them of His course, and universally what is Life and what fulfills a person is living for God’s will.

This was the whole premise between Jesus and the woman at the well.  That she was trying to live a life sustained by physical desires, leading her into bondages, not fulfillment.  Jesus had a entire conversation with the woman and then summed up his whole conversation to the disciples with one phrase, “my food is to do the will of God”.

A true Christian has tasted the goodness of the Lord and knows even in struggles with sin that bondage is not life, but Jesus is!  That we know what we should be doing, and really don’t need an entire conversation like an unbeliever.  Encourage yourself to do God’s will and not settle for anything less than true fulfillment in Christ.

In His Love, Ld
