John 4:41-42-And many more believed because of his word. 42 They said to the woman, “It is no longer because of what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this is indeed the Savior of the world.”
There have been many times where I have been encouraged by people who had some very profound and timely things to say that I knew were right and good for me to hear in my situation. But it wasn’t until the encouraging word they shared with me became my own that I truly benefited!
As a preacher you realize that what you say is not nearly as important than the word that someone makes their own from what you said! This is the difference between what I have heard someone label as being a “passive listener” and an “active listener”. Whether it’s reading the Bible, hearing a sermon, or getting advice from a friend, you can actually agree with what someone said but never make it your own! That would characterize a passive listener.
Sadly this is how we can be severely stunted in our growth as a believer. That instead of truly receiving biblical advice, we “amen it” and move onto the next piece of information. Never really understanding how that advice or word from God should stick and become our own. This would characterize an aggressive listener.
A humble listener will always receive good godly advice and make it their own and truly benefit from their faith. Fight against any laziness that doesn’t look to make God’s truth your own after hearing it.
James 1:21–Therefore put away all filthiness and rampant wickedness and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.
In His Love, Ld
