Luke 19:29-32-(Jesus)….he sent two of the disciples, 30 saying, “Go into the village in front of you, where on entering you will find a colt tied, on which no one has ever yet sat. Untie it and bring it here.  31 If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?‘ you shall say this: ‘The Lord has need of it.'”

As I think back on my previous two kids, having a child that is three years old for the last time is bittersweet in many ways.  It can be tough to answer a barrage of questions that end with “why”, and finally run out of answers, and answering the rest with, “I don’t know sweetheart?”  But children are inquisitive and are freshly learning about their world, so the question of “why” is necessary .

But what about us as adults?  Are we desiring explanations because we want to genuinely grow and learn?  Or are we desperate for explanations because we want to fulfill the temptation Satan introduced to Eve and “be like God”?

Jesus ask His disciples to get Him a colt, and does not explain anything as to why.  Jesus also tells them that if anyone else ask tell them, “the Lord has need of it”.  So they had no explanation, only a command to obey.

Test whether you need an explanation from God on everything He ask you to do?  Sometimes I ask my kids to do something and they ask “why”, and I tell them, “because I told you to”.  Am I being difficult for no reason?  I don’t think so, because God continues to teach me that I need to trust Him without an explanation at times too.  Doing things without an explanation can affirm how much you trust that person not to lead you astray.  I want my kids to learn that they can trust me, as God wants His children to as well.

Remember that respect/reverence is the key to wanting to submit to someone, the deeper the respect the more you trust, and the easier it is to do what is asked.  Ask yourself whether you are really reverencing God as He deserves, or are you struggling with your own “god-complex”, feeling like you need to know “why” for everything?
