If this era we are living in were in the Bible, I wonder how it would be described? What are our gods? What are our spiritual conditions? What are we missing?
We read that about the Israelites aplenty in the Bible. I know whenever we come across a Bible passage, we just skim through. But when you read this, try to imagine God’s tone of voice as He was saying this:
“‘Return, faithless Israel,’ declares the LORD,
‘I will frown on you no longer,
for I am merciful,’ declares the LORD,
‘I will not be angry forever.
13 Only acknowledge your guilt–
you have rebelled against the LORD your God,
you have scattered your favors to foreign gods
under every spreading tree,
and have not obeyed me,'” declares the LORD.
” Jer 3:12-13
Can you hear the anguish and love of a father waiting for his wayward son to return to Him? Or a spurned lover? What were they after that they spurned the Lord for? Wood. Stone. Worthless idols.. Things they could see, touch, and smell…
“How silly?” you might ask. “People back then were sure superstitious and unscientific! I’m glad we live in the 21st century and do not follow such worthless things!”
I wonder what those people living in the 31st century will say about us?
“Why did they worry so much about money when they would all lose it when they die?”
“Why did they idolize their family when idolizing them only ended up ruining them?”
“Why did they fight so hard about politics to provide them with best health care, job opportunities and social security when they would lose them all in just a few short years?”
“Why were they so vain in pursuing physical beauty and youthful looks?” (“They are just a bag of bones now…”)
“How silly!”
Want to transcend the culture and really be different? Try to see everything from God’s eternal perspective. And return to the Lord until that perspective becomes you.
