What if there were no heaven?

One way to know what we really believe about God can be known when we consider the above question.

What if there were no heaven or hell for that matter? What if this life is all there is? Would you still worship and follow God?

If the answer is no, then we are only following God for what He can give us – a promise of a better life to come.

When you are in pain, grief, hopelessness, you do well to look forward to our future home in heaven. But why do you look forward to that home? Is it so that you can escape the current situation? Or is it because God is there?

In other words, are you looking to escape from your misery or are you looking for God?

Godless heaven is a contradiction. Heaven is only so because God is present. Is that what you think of heaven when you think of it?

It may seem like a trivial subtlety, but it is the difference between being religious and being a Christian – between heaven and hell…

Is it wrong to desire relief from this world? Is it wrong to desire a better world? Of course not. But when that desire is the primary reason why we want to be in heaven, then it’s desiring the fiancee’s house more than the fiancee!

Ps. 73:25-26, “Whom have I in heaven but you? And earth has nothing I desire besides you. My flesh and my heart my fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.”

Can we honestly confess that?
